While you are witnessing to an unbeliever on the street, you should look at them with a pure heart. Your motive should be that you want them to come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. You should not slip into lusting after the woman or man you are witnessing to. Jesus witnessed to women several times. Of course, He had a pure and holy heart.
I created this "Holiness Page" with the scriptures on holiness and purity to help Christians walk in a higher level of holiness and purity. I know that the body of Christ really needs it.
God gave me this poem:
Holiness is keeping your eyes on the Lord. Holiness is keeping your eyes on your wife.
Holiness is witnessing to the lost so they can believe and receive eternal life.
Walk in Holiness, My people. Walk in the Spirit with My Word.
Witness the truth of my Gospel to those who have not heard.
Make every crooked place straight and make the rough places smooth.
Get ready, for I Am Coming. Yes, I Am coming soon.
I pray a lot for many marriages to be healed on the phone at work (at Oral Roberts Ministries). Sometimes I get tired of so many calls from Christian wives whose husbands have left them for another woman. (Only about 10% of the time do men call and ask me to pray because their wife left them for another man.) If men and women knew how to walk in holiness and purity, I believe that this would not happen - and marriages would be saved and children of divorced parents would grow up emotionally secure and obedient and not rebelling against society. And yet, many preachers and pastors are afraid to preach about walking in holiness and purity. It is not a popular topic to teach on. I believe that lack of teaching is reflected in the divorce statistics that are the same for Christians as they are for non-Christians. It's a shame. If men and women heard enough teaching and preaching about how to walk in holiness and purity, then I believe that marriages and the families would stay together and the whole country would prosper and be more stable economically, socially and of course, spiritually through walking in righteousness and holiness.
I love what God loves and He loves holiness and purity. I hate what God hates and He hates lust and covetousness. It is the opposite of love. Lust is selfish and controlling and manipulative and fleshly, downright demonic and it can lead to adultery. Many times it does. Love is giving and allows God to be in control and does things by the Spirit (Zech. 4:6). Love prays for God's will in a person's life, not their own selfish will of what they want from them.
I think men (and some women) are deceived many times in thinking that if their needs are not being met, then it is because they married the wrong one or they need another woman (or man) to fulfill their needs. But I know that God has placed in every person a certain void that only He can fill. Your wife or your husband is not supposed to meet ALL of your needs. So the needs that are still unmet need to be filled by a close intimate relationship with God, not through lust and adultery. (Matt. 5:28). If you are tempted, then you need to look up, not around. If you are not spirit-filled, to have that deeper relationship with God perhaps you need the Baptism of the Holy Spirit or perhaps you need to spend more time in prayer and praise and worship to better submit your soul to God and His will for your life. Here are some books that will be helpful and below that are scriptures on holiness and purity.
BOOKS to help you get on the RIGHT TRACK
If you are a guy and are having a problem with lust or you just want to walk in the highest level of sexual purity, then an excellent book to read that is so practical that I highly recommend is: Every Man's Battle by Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker (Waterbrook Press). It is half price right now at Mardel's Christian bookstore.
If you are a lady, a good book for you to read to walk in purity and holiness is called: What Guys See That Girls Don't...Or Do They? by Sharon Daugherty. Christian women need to dress modestly so that they will not cause their Christian brothers to stumble into lust. A lot of the clothes that are "in" fashion nowadays are just not modest, so use godly judgment when buying clothes and don't be influenced by peer pressure or your own desperation to have a guy fall in love with you.
Another book that I have read is called: Power, Holiness and Evangelism (Destiny Image, 1999) compiled by Randy Clark and it has several contributing authors. It is not practical like Every Man's Battle, but the messages or articles will challenge and inspire you.
It does not matter whether you are single, divorced, or widowed, you still need to walk in holiness and purity. Of course, you need to walk in holiness and purity when you are married as well!! Some Christians fall into lust because they are lonely or they want comfort, but the Holy Spirit is the Comforter. The Bible says to think on things that are according to Phil 4:6-9. I honestly believe that all Christians should have a passion for purity. Walking in holiness is not for wimps. You really have to be tough, like a warrior in the spirit to fight the flesh to bring it into subjection to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. So I exhort the men to be WARRIORS!! Don't be a wimp. But be a vessel of honor, a gold vessel, that is fit for the Master's use (1 Thes. 4:4-7).
Scriptures to help you walk in Holiness and Purity (all from NKJ)
Jesus said in Matt. 5:8 - "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."
In Job 31:1, Job, who was married declared: "I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?" vs. 12 says: "for that would be a fire that consumes to destruction and would root out all my increase."
Isaiah 35:8 - A highway shall be there, (in Zion) and a road, And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, shall not go astray.
Psalm 24:3-4 - Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Psalm. 101:3 - I will set nothing wicked before my eyes.
Psalm 96:9 - Oh worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
Psalm 119:9, 11 - How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. vs. 11 - Your word have I hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:36-37 - Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way.
Proverbs 6:25-33 - Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her allure you with her eyelids. For by means of a harlot a man is reduced to a crust of bread; and an adulteress will prey upon his precious life. Can a man take fire to his bosom, And his clothes not be burned? Can one walk on hot coals, And his feet not be seared? So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife; Whoever touches her shall not be innocent. People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving. Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; He may have to give up all the substance of his house. Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul. Wounds and dishonor he will get, And his reproach will not be wiped away.
Proverbs 7:21-27 With her enticing speech she (the adulteress) caused him to yield, with her flattering lips she seduced him. Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, he did not know it would cost his life....vs. 25 - 27: Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men. Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death.
Proverbs 31:3 (the Words of King Lemuel's Mother:) Do not give your strength to women, Nor your ways to that which destroys kings.
Ezekiel 23:36-37 The Lord also said to me: "Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations. For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands.
Matt. 5:28-29 - But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Matt. 6:22 - The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light
Luke 1:74-75 (Zacharias prophesied concerning his newborn son John the Baptist:) To grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
Rom. 12:1 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom. 6:19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
Rom 6:22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
Rom. 13:12-14 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
1 Corin. 6:18-20 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
1 Corin 7:34 There is a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in sprit. But she who is married cares about the things of the world - how she may please her husband.
1 Cor. 9:27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
1 Cor 10:6-13 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell (See the account in Numbers 25:1-9); nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; (See the account in Exodus 17:2) nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
2 Corin. 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
2 Corin. 10:3-6 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
Gal. 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ as made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Gal. 5:13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
Gal. 5:16-17 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
Gal. 5: 22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Gal. 6:7-9 Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to the flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
Eph. 4:22-24 - that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Eph. 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Eph. 5:26-27 - that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, the He may present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Phil 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things.
Col. 1:21- 22 And you who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight -
1 Thes. 4:3-8 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit.
1 Tim 2:15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
2 Tim 2:20-21 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel of honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Heb. 12: 9-10 - Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.
1 Peter 1:13-16 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."
1 Peter 1:22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart
1 Peter 2:11 - Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul
2 Peter 1:4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life- is not of the Father, but is of the world.
1 John 3:3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
Rev. 4:8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they did not rest day or night, saying: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!"
Five Things to Do To Walk in Holiness...
1. Confess your sin to the Lord
2. Repent. Turn from the sin of lusting after women (or whatever the sin is) and determine to make changes in your life.
3. Accountability - Openly and honestly allow another believer to help you change (that could be your wife...and when you tell her how you are struggling with lust, when she hits you on the head with the frying pan, that will help you change - Just kidding, but not really!)
4. Renewal - Read and meditate on God's word day and night and allow it to change your thinking...because "the grass is not greener on the other side. Drink water from you own well. (Prov 5:17-18)
5. Obedience - Listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit and obey His promptings and His guidance. 1 Peter 1:22; 2 Tim. 2:22; 1 Thes. 4:7-8; 1 Thes. 5:19
In my Life Application Bible (NKJV by Tyndale) under 1 Kings 11:3 there is this commentary: For all his wisdom, Solomon had some weak spots. He could not say no to compromise or lustful desires. Whether he married to strengthen political alliances or to gain personal pleasure, these foreign wives led him into idolatry. You may have strong faith, but you also have weak spots - and that is where temptation usually strikes. Strengthen and protect your weaker areas because a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If Solomon, the wisest man, could fall, then so can you."
Under 2 Sam. 13:14-15 another commentary says: Love and lust are very different. After Amnon raped his half sister, his "love" turned to hate. Although he had claimed to be in love, he was actually overcome by lust. Love is patient; lust requires immediate satisfaction. Love is kind; lust is harsh. Love does not demand its own way; lust does. You can read about the characteristics of real love in 1 Cor. 13. Lust may feel like love at first, but when physically expressed, it results in self-disgust and hatred of the other person. If you just can't wait, what you feel is not true love.
